And at the Fraser Gallery (1054 31st St. NW, Tue. – Fri. 12-3, Sat. 12-6) an annual group show of student work is presented. Here the painterly brushwork of Frederick Markham stands out in its secure mastery. His two flower studies are a tour de force that have an assurance of style and manner that hold their own within the awesome weight of the Western tradition. Liz Paxton draws fire in Bondage, and in Shackled wriggles away with love of paint and form. These are very engaging works all within the realist tradition, where the painterly hand ruthlessly rules.
